I'm in support of rotaries in race cars, they sound amazing. The real issues with rotaries are heavy consumption and maintenance. Not an issue in a race car depending on the series it's in.

787B's rotary: apparently slower than its contemporaries, and yet less prone to technicals, more efficient, netting easy wins. Added plus: sounded badass.
Don't quote me on this. I was alive at the time, but not tuned in to Le Mans.

These engines are like top fuel drag motors, as long as they get rebuilt after each race they do the job. Other than that, garbage.

I posted it, and even I hate it. BBBUUUTTTT it's unmistakable as a race-car engine. In that sense we can appreciate what it is.

I helped a friend at a historic race in sebring fl years back, the 787b was 787 times louder than everything else on the track... It was the closest thing I have experienced to the "brown note"
